The Canzoniere , less commonly known by its original Latin title Rerum vulgarium
fragmenta
(or, including the author's name, Francisci Petrarch laureati poete Rerum vulgarium
fragmenta
[ N 1 ] , "Fragments of compositions in the vernacular by Francesco Petrarca,
crowned poet of laurel") [ N 2 ] , is the story, told through poetry, of the interior life of
Francesco Petrarca. Composed on several occasions throughout almost the poet's entire life
(i.e. starting from the Bolognese period between 1320-1326 and up to the year of his death in
1374), the Canzoniere includes 366 compositions in vernacular verse and is one of main works
of Italian literature for the depth of language, thought, inner suffering and the hope of
redemption. Furthermore, it marked the Italian literary poetic model for centuries, thanks to
the action of Cardinal Pietro Bembo .
